Panerai Serial Numbers Guide

Every modern Panerai carries a small engraving on its caseback that tells you the year it was made: a series letter followed by the watch’s number in its production run, like S 0511/1000. Decode the letter and you have the production year. S is 2016, so that example is the 511th piece of a 1,000-watch run made in 2016.

At NW Timepieces, we buy, sell and authenticate pre-owned Panerai, and the series letter is the first thing we check. Below is the complete year chart from 1997 to today, how to read every number on the caseback, and what Panerai’s PAM.GUARD program can and can’t do for you. Or skip the chart: enter your code in the lookup below.

How to Read a Panerai Caseback

A Panerai caseback usually carries four different numbers. Only one of them tells you the year.

  • Series code (the year). A letter, or two letters on 2024 and later watches, followed by the watch’s number and the size of the run, for example T 0125/0500. This is the one to decode.
  • Case number. Two letters followed by digits, such as BB1234567. BB is the most common prefix; DB, PL, PN and others also appear. It identifies the individual case, but Panerai has never published what the letters mean, and it doesn’t encode a year.
  • Case-type number. “OP” followed by four digits, such as OP 7303. It identifies the case type, not the year.
  • Movement number. Engraved on the movement itself and visible on display-back models.

Positions vary by model. On display casebacks, look at the steel ring around the sapphire window. The engravings are small, so angle the watch under good light and use a loupe if you have one.

Panerai Year Letter Chart (1997–2026)

Panerai began marking each year’s production with a letter in 1998, starting at A. After Z in 2023, it moved to two letters: AA for 2024 and AB for 2025.

Series Code Year
No letter (Pre-A) 1997
A 1998
B 1999
C 2000
D 2001
E 2002
F 2003
G 2004
H 2005
I 2006
J 2007
K 2008
L 2009
M 2010
N 2011
Series Code Year
O 2012
P 2013
Q 2014
R 2015
S 2016
T 2017
U 2018
V 2019
W 2020
X 2021
Y 2022
Z 2023
AA 2024
AB 2025
AC (expected) 2026

The letter marks the year the watch was produced, not the year it was sold. A watch from a 2019 (V) series can easily carry a 2020 or 2021 date on its warranty card.

PAM Reference Numbers Don’t Tell You the Year

A PAM number, such as PAM00111 or PAM01312, identifies the model: its case, dial and movement configuration. Panerai often produces the same reference for many years, so two PAM00111s can be a decade apart. The reference number isn’t engraved on the case either; you’ll find it on the warranty card and the box.

The reference is still useful as a cross-check. Every reference has a launch year, so a series letter that predates the model’s introduction is a red flag worth investigating before you buy.

What Is PAM.GUARD?

PAM.GUARD is Panerai’s online program for registering a watch and extending its warranty. It isn’t a public database where anyone can look up a serial number, which is a common misunderstanding.

Who can use it

Watches bought within the last two years are eligible. Registering adds up to six years to the standard two-year warranty, for up to eight years of coverage in total. Panerai can refuse or cancel coverage for a watch it suspects is lost or stolen.

How to register a watch

  1. Go to Panerai’s service site at services.panerai.com.
  2. Scan the QR code on your warranty card, or type in the serial number.
  3. Validate the watch and subscribe to PAM.GUARD.
  4. Add it to your online Panerai collection.

The digital passport

Watches bought from October 2023 onward also come with a digital passport, which you claim through PAM.GUARD. It records the watch’s specifications and its ownership history, and it’s linked to a lost-and-stolen watch database, so a watch reported stolen shows up as stolen. When you sell or give the watch away, the passport is designed to transfer to the new owner.

What it means if you’re buying or selling pre-owned

For a recent watch, the warranty card’s QR code and a transferable digital passport are strong supporting evidence, and you should expect them with any 2023-or-later Panerai. For older watches, PAM.GUARD won’t help: the watch is outside the two-year window and predates the passport. There, authentication comes down to the caseback markings, the movement and the paperwork, which is where an experienced dealer earns their keep.

Special Cases: Pre-A, OOR and Shadow Cases

  • Pre-A. Watches made in 1997, before the lettered series began, carry no year letter. Collectors call them “Pre-A,” and they’re highly sought after.
  • OOR (Out of Range). Some pieces are numbered outside the regular series, for example OOR 0025/0100, and carry no year letter. Date these from the warranty card or Panerai’s service records.
  • Shadow cases. Watches made for trade fairs and presentations may carry no series code at all, only the case and case-type numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I look up a Panerai serial number online?

Not publicly. Panerai doesn’t offer an open serial number database. You can register a recently bought watch through PAM.GUARD, and Panerai’s customer service can check a watch’s records, but the quickest way to date a Panerai yourself is the series letter on the caseback.

Where is the serial number on a Panerai?

On the caseback, along with the series code and the OP case-type number. It’s also printed on the warranty card. On a few older or limited models, markings appear on the side of the case or between the lugs.

What does a number like 0511/1000 mean?

Your watch is number 511 in a run of 1,000. From the F series (2003) on, the run counts that specific model for that year. On A to E series watches (1998–2002), it counted all dial and case variations of the model together.

Does the year letter prove a Panerai is authentic?

No. Counterfeits copy caseback markings too. A year letter that fits the reference is a good sign, but authentication also means checking the engraving quality, the movement, the dial and the paperwork. If you’d like a second opinion, contact us.

Do I need PAM.GUARD to sell my Panerai?

No, but if your watch has a digital passport, transferring it to the buyer makes the sale smoother and supports the price. If you’re thinking about selling, you can get an offer from us.
